The Belgian coast, though the shortest in Europe at just 67 km, experiences significant tides with a tidal range of 4 to 5 metres. From De Panne at the French border to Knokke-Heist at the Dutch border, the Belgian coast offers an almost continuous sandy beach punctuated by seaside resorts and fishing ports.
The ports of Ostend, Zeebrugge (one of Europe's largest ports), and Nieuwpoort depend on tide times for their commercial and leisure operations. The North Sea, shallow in this area, creates tidal conditions amplified by the wind. The vast sandy beaches, exposed at low tide for several hundred metres, are the playground for sand yachting, the flagship sport of the Belgian coast.
