Gironde is home to two remarkable maritime phenomena: the Arcachon basin, the only lagoon on the French Atlantic coast, and the tidal bore (mascaret), a wave that surges up the Garonne and Dordogne rivers. The 3 to 4 metre tidal range is enough to empty and fill the entire Arcachon basin, revealing the oyster beds of Cap-Ferret and the winding channels of the Leyre delta.
The Gironde estuary, the largest in Western Europe, creates powerful currents and complex navigation conditions. The Dune of Pilat, Europe's tallest sand dune, overlooks the Arcachon basin and offers stunning views of the tidal cycle. Surfers at Lacanau and Le Porge adapt their sessions to tide times that dramatically alter wave quality.
