Somme is home to one of the most beautiful bays in the world, classified as a Grand Site de France. The Bay of the Somme, a vast 72 km² estuary, empties almost completely at low tide with a tidal range of 7 to 9 metres. This natural spectacle reveals an immense foreshore home to France's largest colony of harbour seals and hundreds of species of migratory birds.
The ports of Le Crotoy and Saint-Valery-sur-Somme are accessible only at high tide, imposing a way of life entirely dictated by tide times. Guided crossings of the bay on foot, between quicksand and channels, are an iconic activity attracting thousands of visitors each year. Cockle fishing, seal watching, and coastal hiking make Somme a major maritime destination in northern France.
